This summer, The Sense Group’s Drinkaware initiative is launching its latest responsible drinking campaign, timed to coincide with the busiest party months of the year and the lead-up to the festive season.
Research shows that alcohol consumption rises in hot weather, as cold drinks feel more appealing when temperatures climb, making summer in Malta the right time to be having this conversation. The campaign is phrased around a single objective: avoiding the worst possible outcomes.
The concept is simple but far-reaching. Irresponsible drinking doesn’t just put you at risk – it can turn a great night into your worst one, bring out the worst version of yourself, and in the most serious cases, lead to decisions that cause irreversible damage. Chief among those is drink-driving, which the campaign addresses directly as one of the worst choices a person can make, not just for themselves, but for everyone sharing the road.
Ray Grech, Director General of The Sense Group, weighs in: “We all frequently ask ourselves ‘what’s the worst that can happen?’ Well, when it comes to drink-driving, you can expect the worst to happen. Nothing good can come out of it. As the representative body of moderate alcohol consumption, The Sense Group never tires of sending out these messages to the public.”
The campaign spans several social media posts, each anchored by the word “worst”. It targets a wide range of audiences and scenarios: parents who want to be fully present for their families, friends who look out for each other before the night goes too far, colleagues mindful of the impression they leave, and bartenders who play a key role in responsible service. The overarching message is one of personal responsibility – that the difference between your best night and your worst often comes down to choices only you can make.
One of the more encouraging shifts the campaign reflects is a cultural one. Malta has made real strides in recent years to normalise the idea of booking a cab. What was once an afterthought is now a plan made at the start of the evening. Large-scale events are increasingly built around this mindset, with organisers factoring in safe transport options as a matter of course rather than a last resort. This campaign builds on that momentum, reinforcing the idea that getting home safely is the true mark of a good night done right.
The Sense Group’s Drinkaware initiative is also proud to align this campaign with #UnitedInModeration, a broader European movement led by Spirits Europe coordinating responsible drinking initiatives across 21 countries. In 2025 alone, the movement ran 92 campaigns reaching an estimated 90 million people, and the data points in the right direction. Malta’s own “Better Safe Than Sorry” campaign was featured in the movement’s 2026 Responsible Drinking Initiatives Report, recognising it at a European level. This new campaign builds on that foundation.
Every great night is a choice. So is every worst one. This summer, make it your best.
